Smithfield Recreation Association
2009 Baseball and Softball Draft Rules

The Smithfield Recreation Association (SRA) adopted the following draft rules for all baseball and softball divisions in 2007. This draft was developed to provide a more equitable distribution of player talent and to improve the competitiveness within each division. The changes are intended to help coaches who are new to SRA or new to the Smithfield area who may not be well-known and who may not have the opportunity to “protect” players other than his/her own child. They are also intended to emphasize more involvement from our managers and coaches. This begins with attendance and participation in the player’s showcases and proper draft preparation.

Below is the outline of the Baseball and Softball Draft Rules approved by the SRA Board of Directors:

1) A coach my “protect” a maximum of four (4) players including his/her own son/daughter.

2) There is no limit as to the amount of All-Star players each team may draft and ultimately have on their roster.

3) If a manger wishes to “protect” a player whose sibling is also a registered player in the same division and the parents are requesting that the siblings play on the same team, the manager is required to draft the siblings which will count against their maximum 4 protected players. Regardless of the number of siblings involved, there are still a maximum number of 4 players that may be “protected” including his/her own child. Siblings that are ultimately drafted, (not protected) may be drafted together and each sibling will count against the manager’s current and subsequent draft picks, depending on the number of siblings involved in that transaction. i.e.: Coach A has pick in the 5th round and wishes to draft player A who has a brother (player B) and a sister (player C). If the coach wishes to draft player A in the 5th round, he is required to draft players B and C as his 6th and 7th picks as well and will not draft again until the 8th round after all coaches have completed the 7th round.

4) For any manager/team that does not protect the maximum 4 players, they will draft in the open rounds in order, which is determined by random draw, until all teams have 4 players on their roster.

5) Each manager may initiate one (1) trade. A trade can consist of multiple players. A manager may be a participant in a maximum of two (2) trades with only one (1) initiated by each manager.

6) Late sign-up players who missed the draft shall be assigned to the next manager/team using the following process steps:

a) Manager/team that has had a player(s) withdrawal. Note: The manager of the team that has a player(s) withdrawal shall immediately notify the baseball or softball commissioner. A player that has withdrawn from a team shall forfeit their right to play in the Smithfield Recreation Association that season.
b) Next manager/team in draft order.

Late sign-up players will be assigned in order of date received as per steps “a” or “b” above. If two or more player’s registration was received on the same date, the names shall be drawn from a hat and assigned as per steps “a” or “b” above. Late sign-up player’s registration shall immediately be signed and dated by the board member who first receives it. Registrations that are mailed shall use the date it was post marked. All late registrations will be turned over to the registration director. Once validated, the director will notify the appropriate commissioner.
